U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur’s only Democratic opposition in the upcoming primary election has withdrawn as a candidate.

Cory Hoffman, a Huron lawyer, withdrew on Thursday because of flaws in his signature petitions, according to the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections where candidate petitions for the 9th Congressional District are filed.

The elections board is scheduled to meet Tuesday to certify petitions for the election May 6.

Mr. Hoffman’s departure leaves Miss Kaptur (D., Toledo) with no opposition for the party’s nomination in a district that now includes much of West Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. Two years ago she defeated U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D., Cleveland) for the nomination.

Two Republicans have filed for the primary to challenge Miss Kaptur in November. They are Robert Horrocks, Jr., of Lakewood and Richard May of Cleveland. Mr. May is chairman of the Tea Party-oriented Cleveland Conservative Network.

Susan Purviance, a University of Toledo associate professor of philosophy, filed to run as the Socialist candidate but withdrew Feb. 7.
