U.S. Sen. Rob Portman (R., Ohio) will tour two of Lucas County's larger employers on Friday — the General Motors Toledo Transmission plant on Alexis Road in West Toledo and the Ohio Air National Guard 180th Fighter Wing base in Swanton.

The first-term senator from the Cincinnati area will also be in town Friday night to give the keynote address at the annual Lincoln Day Dinner being held by the Lucas County Republican Party.

“Toledo is home to some of the most skilled workers in the world and I’m looking forward to hearing from GM employees and discussing my job-training legislation,” Mr. Portman said today. “I’ll then travel to Swanton and have the honor of joining Col. [Craig] Baker and meeting with members of the Ohio Air National Guard.” Colonel Baker is the new base commander.

The events are set for Friday afternoon.

Mr. Portman this week in Washington promoted a new plan developed by the Republican minority in the Senate aimed at boosting economic activity in the U.S. The seven-point plan called "Jobs for America" covers "common sense" health-care reform, domestic energy production, eliminating business regulation, job re-training, a federal balanced budget amendment, federal tax cuts, and opening markets in other countries for U.S. products.
