LAMBERTVILLE -- Bedford Public Schools Superintendent Mark Kleinhans said at a levy gathering tonight that the school tax request already has lost at the polls.

Bedford was asking voters to approve a 4.37-mill levy that would have funded an extensive makeover of the district's aged buildings and construction of an elementary school. Most of the district's facilities date to the 1950s and 1960s.

The Bedford school board's plan would have raised $70.35 million to issue 30-year bonds to finance the renovations and construction. The net new cost to the owner of a $175,000 home, the district's average, would have been $178.40 per year, officials estimated.
