Daniel DeAngelis, the deputy director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, resigned today, effective June 2.

The resignation notice comes a day before he and four other board members or staffers were scheduled to face a hearing officer to defend their jobs.

Mr. DeAngelis gave no explanation for his decision, and said it was his honor and privilege to have served the voters of Lucas County.

Mr. DeAngelis, 51, was hired July 18, 2011. Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted on Monday announced he was recommending the removal of Mr. DeAngelis, a Democrat, along with the board's director, Republican Gina Kaczala, and three board members, Democrat Ron Rothenbuhler and Republicans Tony DeGidio and Jon Stainbrook.

Mr. Husted blasted a culture of dysfunction and neglect of duty on the elections board, but has not detailed wrongdoing by the fired officials.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matt Damschroder is to hold due-process hearings with the officials Thursday in Toledo's Government Center.
