Perrysburg City Council agreed Tuesday to donate $5,000 to the Little Jackets summer reading program.

Council voted 5-1 for the donation with only councilman Todd Grayson opposing it.

Mr. Grayson said he supported the program and even personally donated money to it, but believed taxpayers‘‍ money should not pay for it.

“The issue here is with the kids,” said Jim Matuszak, councilman. “We are talking about kids who need to learn how to read,” he said in response to Mr. Grayson’‍s argument.

The Little Jackets summer reading youth program is run by the Perrysburg School District. The eight-week class at the Perrysburg Heights Community Center is designed to prepare children for the state‘s third-grade reading test. It is for children going into kindergarten, first, second, or third grade this fall. The program costs $10 a week per family.

The camp began Monday.

The council also preliminarily voted to annex two lots in Willowbend subdivision from Perrysburg Township. A second vote next month will finalize the deal.

The majority of the subdivision off River Road was annexed by the city from the township in 2007. One lot was not annexed then, and has since been divided.
