Council objects to liquor license renewal at 3 bars

Toledo City Council on Tuesday voted unanimously to object to the renewal of liquor licenses for three bars.

Council voted 12-0 against renewals for Pulse Ultra, 1260 W. Alexis Rd.; Lacy’s Playhouse, 4500 N. Detroit Ave., and Missi’s Sports Bar and Lounge and Patio, 2200 W. Alexis.

Councilman Theresa Gabriel said the business owners can appeal council’s objection to the Ohio Department of Liquor Control.

Pulse Ultra’s address turned up in 24 police reports in 2015 for assaults, drug abuse, drug possession, drug trafficking, disorderly conduct, public indecency, theft, firearms incidents, and aggravated assault. The establishment is now known as Envy night club.

Lacey’s Playhouse, an adult entertainment venue, was the scene for 16 police reports in 2015. 

The reports were for assaults, drug possession, drug trafficking, disorderly conduct, aggravated menacing, domestic violence, thefts, weapons and concealed carry incidents, resisting arrest, and robbery.

There were 35 reports for incidents at Missi’s in 2015, including drug and paraphernalia possession, public indecency, assault, criminal damage, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, felonious assault, domestic violence, aggravated menacing, and drug overdose.

Council spared Downtown Variety/​Jennifer’s Snacks, 601 Adams St., of an objection. Only two members, Sandy Spang and Matt Cherry, voted in favor of that objection.

District 4 Councilman Yvonne Harper, who represents downtown within her district, asked council to allow the store to have a license renewal.

“He is offering something downtown that we don’t have — something in the vicinity of the offices downtown,” Ms. Harper said of the store’s owner.

In other business, Council voted to spend $1,024,664 from the water bond improvement fund for a maintenance shop renovation and stockroom project at the water-treatment plant; $253,000 from the special assessment fund for three trucks, eight mowers, and a dump truck, and $12,242 from the general fund for membership into the 2016 U.S. Conference of Mayors.

The spending measures passed unanimously with the exception of the U.S. Conference of Mayors expenditure. Councilman Tom Waniewski voted against it.
