The Northwestern Ohio Building and Construction Trades Council on Wednesday endorsed Wade Kapszukiewicz for mayor.

The council includes skilled trades unions that represent electricians, plumbers, painters, roofers, masons, insulators, and others in the Toledo area.

Mr. Kapszukiewicz, an unendorsed Democrat and the Lucas County Treasurer, is challenging incumbent Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson, the endorsed Democrat, for mayor in the Nov. 7 election.

Shaun Enright, executive secretary and business manager of the council, said the council’s executive board vote Wednesday also includes a $10,000 campaign contribution. He said the group believes that Mr. Kapszukiewicz “is the right person, at the right time, to lead Toledo and allow the city and its residents to achieve their full potential.

“Wade understands our issues and has been a staunch advocate for working people during his entire time in elected office,” Mr. Enright said.

The building trades council’s vote occurs a little over a week after the AFL-CIO of Greater Northwest Ohio unanimously endorsed Ms. Hicks-Hudson. The unions that belong to the building trades council also belong to the AFL-CIO, of which Mr. Enright is currently the president.

He said some unions in the AFL-CIO opposed the endorsement of Ms. Hicks-Hudson at the executive board level, but supported the recommendation of the executive board to the membership.
