MINNEAPOLIS Buddy Bell resigned as the Kansas City Royals manager, effective at the end of the season.

Bell announced the decision before today s game against the Minnesota Twins and said he will remain on for the rest of the season. He will join the Royals front office in 2008 as a senior adviser to general manager Dayton Moore.

I had to make a choice between managing and my family, an emotional Bell said, and to me that s a no-brainer.

Health concerns also played a part in Bell s decision. Last September, he had surgery to remove a cancerous growth in his throat.

Bell, a five-time All-Star who turns 55 on Aug. 27, is the son of major league outfielder Gus Bell, himself a four-time All-Star. David Bell and Michael Bell sons of Buddy also reached the majors.

Before becoming the Royals 14th manager on May 31, 2005, he managed the Detroit Tigers from 1996-1998 and the Colorado Rockies from 2000-02.
