Campbell back with Lions after his duty for U.S. Army

ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Detroit Lions got Caleb Campbell on the football field two years after they drafted him out of the Army.

The Lions announced they signed Campbell on Friday along with seven undrafted free agents before starting their rookie orientation camp.

Detroit drafted Campbell in the seventh round of the 2008 NFL draft. On the eve of training camp, he was told not to sign his contract.

The U.S. Army revised its interpretation of U.S. Department of Defense policy regarding soldiers playing professional sports, requiring cadets to complete two years of active duty before applying for a release.

Campbell says he's glad the Lions were still interested in giving him a shot to play two years later.
