Carter, a 24-year-old defenseman, led the Wildcats to the 2012 state title as a senior. Carter just wrapped up his senior season at Utica College, tallying 39 points with 11 goals and 28 assists in 26 games.

Toledo coach Dan Watson said the team has some holes to fill due to injures among Toledo's defensive corps.

“He's a local kid who had a great senior season at Utica,” Watson said. “We have some injuries in the back end and thought it would be great to reward a hometown player with an opportunity.”

Carter is under a short-term contract with the team, lasting either five games or 10 days.

“We signed him to an ATO to see what he is like,” Watson said.

The 6-foot-1 and 200-pound defenseman played four seasons at Utica College. He produced 82 points (23 goals, 59 assists) in 106 college games.

Carter scored a goal in Northview's 5-2 win over Lakewood St. Edward in the 2012 state title game. It was the school's first state team title in any sport. Carter also had a goal and three assists in Northview's 6-0 win in the state semifinals over Olentangy Orange.

Watson said he expects Carter to see some playing time during Toledo's three-game weekend homestand.

Watson still intends to trade for a “high-end” defenseman before the ECHL trade deadline at 3 p.m. on Thursday.

The Walleye host Quad City on Friday and Saturday before taking on Indy at the Huntington Center on Sunday.

In another roster move on Wednesday, forward Dylan Sadowy was recalled to Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. Sadowy ranks eighth on the team in scoring with 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists) in 37 games for the Walleye.
