Ex-theater site to be redeveloped; restaurant, retail space to follow

The developers of a multimillion dollar hotel and restaurant project in West Toledo said this morning that the first hotel — a Hampton Inn — should be open within a year, while an official announcement on coming restaurants could be made within 60 days.

Toledo-based Key Hotel and Property Management is redeveloping the former Showcase Cinemas site on Secor Road, with plans to build two hotels as well as restaurant and retail space. In all, the project is expected to cost $25 million. 

The developers hosted a groundbreaking ceremony and press conference this morning at the site. Work has already begun on the Hampton Inn. Steve Roumaya, a partner with Key, said the hotel should open in July, 2014.

Discussions are under way with national restaurant and retail chains, Mr. Roumaya said, with another groundbreaking expected in 60 to 90 days.

"Hopefully more business people will come and get involved in this project here," he said.

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell and District 5 Councilman Tom Waniewski both praised the project as an important redevelopment.
