MTCU to hold its Fall Assembly
11/3/2001Dr. Richard Gaillardetz, the first professor of Catholic studies at the University of Toledo, will be the featured speaker for the Metro-Toledo Churches United Fall Assembly on Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church, 4441 Monroe St.
The topic is “Christian Missions in the World: Evangelism or Consumer Marketing?” The assembly begins with dinner at 6 p.m. and the cost is $12.50. Registration is required at 242-7401.
A plea to allow ultra-Orthodox Jews of priestly heritage to fly inside body bags - to avoid becoming ritually “unclean” when traveling over a Jewish cemetery - was rejected by Israel's El Al airline.
El Al, whose planes sometimes take off from Tel Aviv over a cemetery, said it briefly considered the idea before rejecting it on security grounds.
Under ritual law, Jews descended from the biblical Israelite priests must not enter cemeteries.
A recent ruling by prominent ultra-Orthodox rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv expanded the ban to include flying over a cemetery and suggested plastic body bags as a solution.
Proceeds from the inaugural New Hope Gala Auction Dinner, starting at 6 p.m. Friday at the Pinnacle, 1772 Indian Wood Circle, Maumee, will benefit 24 Toledo-area Christian organizations and charities, according to Jim Oedy of New Hope Christian Community Foundation.
The auction goal is to raise more than $150,000 for the ministries. Information: 382-0485.
A specially discounted pastors study tour to Israel and the Holy Land is scheduled for Jan. 28-Feb. 6 by New Chapter Holy Land Tours of Ministries, Inc., of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Chicago.
