Spiritual side of caregiving to be studied
2/15/2003Honor Hill, a Christian Science practitioner from Dallas, will conduct a workshop on “A Spiritual Approach to Caregiving” at 6:45 p.m. Monday in the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library's McMaster Center.
Ms. Hill, a graduate of the University of Calgary who has taught at Columbia College, Vancouver, B.C., said the workshop will show people how a spiritual approach can make their caregiving more effective and help with caregiver fatigue, depression, and resentment.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Declining donations have forced Focus on the Family, an influential evangelical ministry with a global media reach and national political clout, to cut $5 million from its budget and lay off 34 employees.
The layoffs are the first in the ministry's 26 years, a spokesman said. Another 66 vacant positions will be eliminated from the 1,300-member work force.
The Colorado Springs-based ministry, headed by Dr. James Dobson, airs 14 radio and television programs in more than 100 countries to a potential audience of 200 million and publishes more than a dozen periodicals.
Focus' budget, $130 million this year, comes entirely from donations.

A Children's Ministry Conference featuring Sue Miller, executive director of children's ministry at Willow Creek Community Church in Barrington, Ill., is planned for Feb. 28 and March 1 at Westgate Chapel.

DURHAM, N.C. - Pay for Protestant clergy in the United States has increased faster than inflation over the last 25 years, but the economic picture is still tough for many pastors, a survey conducted by Duke University's Divinity School says.
Median pay - including the value of any free housing - is now $40,000, similar to that of school teachers and social workers, the survey said. Roman Catholic priests, with no wives and children to support, receive a median of $25,000.
CHICAGO - The Chicago-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests reports its membership grew substantially during 2002, when many Roman Catholic molesting cases came to light.
SNAP, which was founded by former Toledoan Barbara Blaine, said it started the year with fewer than 3,000 members and nine local support groups, but now counts 4,500 members with groups in 44 cities covering most states and seven more now being organized. A Spanish-speaking outreach has also been established.
The report said more than 90 percent of members were victimized by Catholic priests, bishops, brothers, nuns or seminarians, and the rest by Protestant clergy.
