The Rev. Karen Shepler will have her last day in the pulpit Sunday before she retires from Monroe Street United Methodist Church on Tuesday, but don’t look for a sermon.

During Sunday’s service, which starts at 9:30 a.m., members of the congregation will share their memories of Pastor Shepler’s 12 years at the church. The service will be a celebration for her and will include a litany of thanksgiving for her ministry. A reception will follow.

Pastor Shepler wrote in the church newsletter that “as I look to the future, I see beaches and mountains and reading and writing and lots of other things.” But she will also continue ministry. “I hope to be working with felons here in the area, trying to help them get training and jobs, working with the [Ohio Ex-Offender] Reentry Coalition and other folks in the area who have the same interests,” Pastor Shepler said.

On June 30 Monroe Street United Methodist, at 3613 Monroe St., will welcome its new minister, the Rev. Dennis Payne, who comes from Willis Chapel AME Church in Kansas City.
