Deaconate ordination

It's like a deluge of deacons. Seventeen candidates will be admitted to the permanent deaconate at an 11 a.m. ceremony today at Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd. Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo Bishop Leonard Blair will ordain the men. This group will push the number of permanent deacons in the diocese past 200. There will not be another such ordination for three years, as the next class of deacons is forming now. In deacons' training, “it's a very intense process because it includes the wife,” who also goes through formation and attends many classes with her husband, said Sally Oberski, communications director for the diocese.

Day of Atonement

Today is Yom Kippur, the solemn Jewish day of atonement. Multiple religious services are held throughout the day at the three area synagogues and at Chabad House. It is also a day of fasting; at Temple Shomer Emunim, 6453 Sylvania Ave., Sylvania, the fast breaks after the 3 p.m. service and at 6:30 p.m. the Temple offers a dairy buffet (the time for RSVPs has passed). The fast ends at 8:26 p.m. at Chabad House, 4020 Nantuckett Dr., and a meal will be served. At Congregation B'nai Israel, 6525 Sylvania Ave., Sylvania, 8:29 p.m. is the set time for the fast to end; B'nai Israel also offers a meal but reservations were required. Then at 8:30 p.m. at Congregation Etz Chayim, 3853 Woodley Rd., the shofar is blown followed by breaking the fast. The day does not formally end until sundown in the Jewish religion, so slight variations in the time are tied to tradition and interpretation, while the Temple, the Reform congregation, is also more liberal about considering the end of day.

Organ student scholarships

The Toledo chapter of the American Guild of Organists holds auditions for organ student scholarships of up to $500 on Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at Monroe Street United Methodist Church, 3613 Monroe St. Applications with a letter of recommendation must be mailed or emailed by Friday. Eligible applicants are in grades 7-12 or adults who are not enrolled in a collegiate organ program, and the scholarships are for lessons from a Toledo chapter member. Concert at Calvary

On Friday at 7 p.m., local group/national recording artists Sanctus Real headline an outdoor concert on the lawn at Calvary Church, 1360 Conant St., Maumee. Cosmic Grace comes to Bowling Green

On Saturday at 2 p.m. at 14355 Campbell Hill Rd., Bowling Green, the spiritual leader Brahmrishi Shree Kumar Swami Ji will demonstrate what is called the divine science of Cosmic Grace, which he claims is a type of physical, mental, and financial healing. The spiritual healing offered is not a substitute for medical care, Swamiji, as he is known informally, states.
