Young Gospel

Rehearsal time is over for those taking part in Warren AME Church's 2014 Gospel Extravaganza, with the theme “Changing Minds, Changing Lives.” Today the youth and young adults involved in choirs, drill, mime, poetry, praise dance, praise teams, rap, step, and vocals will perform—22 entrants as of press time—along with special guests the praise team from Ohio State University. Minister Rowena Lee of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church is mistress of ceremony for the program, expected to last about three hours. Admission is free, and a freewill offering will be collected. The show starts at 4 p.m. at Warren, 915 Collingwood Blvd.

 

Jews in Assisi

The Rev. Andre Cirino will speak about events in Assisi, Italy, during World War II in a “Faith Talks” lecture Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Franciscan Center of Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. During the war Don Aldo Brunacci, the secretary to the bishop, helped to coordinate the hiding of Jews in Assisi's convents, monasteries, and friaries.

 

Pastors in pink

The installation of officers for the 2014-16 term of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance leadership will have a touch of pink Sunday at 4 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, 831 N. Detroit Ave. The alliance is advocating for breast cancer awareness, and to make that visual, members and guests are encouraged to wear something pink as part of their apaprel for the ceremony. The American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen Foundation now will provide pink ribbon lapel pins.

Those being installed as IMA officers are the Rev. Cedric Brock of Mt. Nebo, who will begin another term as president, and the Rev. Lee Williams of Search Lite Community Church, who will continue as executive secretary. The Rev. Robert Birt of Glass City Church is first vice president, the Rev. Jerry Boose of Second Baptist Church in Spencer Township is second vice president, the Rev. Otis Gordon of Warren AME is treasurer, the Rev. Chester Trail of Grace Temple Church of God in Christ is parliamentarian, and Bishop Nelson Clark of Power House Tabernacle is sergeant at arms. The Rev. Shirley Sparks of Walls Memorial Zion AME Church is chaplain, and Bishop Randall Parker of Manifest Word Church is assistant chaplain.

 

Melendez's music ministry

Tony Melendez is a Roman Catholic musician and composer who has played for the pope five times. His music is inspirational in part because of Mr. Melendez's own story: he is a guitar player who was born without arms. Mr. Melendez will perform at Bishop Hoffman Catholic School's Margo Reilly Athletic & Performin Arts Center, 702 Croghan St., Fremont, Wednesday at 7 p.m. Tickets for the concert are $5, available at the door, for those age 5 and older. A $10 ticket for dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Church Hall across the street followed by the concert is

 

Calling for life—without parole

The Toledo chapter of the Association of U.S. Catholic Priests is urging the Ohio House of Representatives to pass H.B. 385, which would end the death penalty and replace it with a sentence of life without parole. Ed Hoover, spokesman for the Toledo priests' committee, said, “The death penalty is anti-life and it must end.” The committee noted that testimony on the bill was being held at the same time as the annual March for Life, and Mr. Hoover said, “We stand for the poor and vulnerable from womb to tomb. We insist on a consistent ethic of life.”
