The fifth annual celebrate marriage dinner is on St. Joseph Maumee's menu today. After a 5 p.m. Mass at the Roman Catholic church, 104 W. Broadway St., Maumee, at which married couples can renew vows, the dinner and presentation will be at Parkway Place Catering & Event Center, 2592 Parkway Plaza, Maumee. The admission price of $30, which can be paid at Parkway Place after the Mass, includes the meal and a copy of Ordinary Lives, Extraordinary Mission: 5 Steps to Winning the War Within, written by the evening's speaker, Dr. John Wood, an eye doctor associated with the Dynamic Catholic Institute, a new evangelization organization. Music will be provided by SimplyRC.
Lutherans on race and justice
The Northwest Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) offers the first of two sessions of “Real Talk, Real People: A Conversation about the Body of Christ, Race, and Justice” Thursday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 935 W. Bigelow Ave., Findlay. The Rev. Sherman Hicks, the ELCA director for multicultural ministries, is lead presenter for the conversations on race, justice, and the work of the Church. Thursday's meeting is primarily for clergy, and the second conversation, on March 15 at 10 a.m. at Zoar Lutheran Church, Perrysburg, is primarily for lay people, but all people are welcome at either event. The two sessions have different angles because of the activities of the groups. Cost for each event is $10 for lunch; advance registration is not required, but the synod office asks for those intending to attend to contact the office at least three days before, by calling 419-423-3664 or emailing sherri.wagner@nwos-elca.org.
Presbyterian picture show
On Friday at 7 p.m., Collingwood Presbyterian Church, 2108 Collingwood Blvd., offers a movie night with separate films for children and adults. The adults' movie, timed for Black History Month, is Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. Children can watch Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Admission is free.
Acknowledging leaders
St. Stephen's Church of God in Christ, 5509 Dorr St., will celebrate Black History Month Feb. 22 at 4 p.m. with the theme “Civil Rights in America” and a ceremony honoring area African American men and women. Two women and 10 men will receive recognition, and all five African American Toledo City Council members will attend as special guests.
