The Rev. Aristotle Damaskos, who has left Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral for a new pastorate, as reported in The Blade March 22, was not able to say where he was going until his new congregation made it official. That happened Thursday, and he said that he is now pastor at at Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity in Charleston, S.C.
Powell and Parkinson's
The Rev. Lee Powell, senior pastor of CedarCreek Church, announced to his congregation Sunday in a video that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. “Am I asking God why?” he said. “Absolutely not. What I ask God is what. What's next? What do you want me to do next, God; what do you want us to do to glorify you through this condition, this thing that we're facing?” He will continue his ministry, and will sometimes prerecord his messages. No trafficking
Vineyard Church Perrysburg’s Anti-Human Trafficking Interest Group hosts a screening of the documentary Nefarious: Merchant of Souls today at 6:45 p.m. at the church, 210 E. South Boundary, Perrysburg. The viewing is restricted to adults and older teens.
Jesus upgraded
A 35-year-old movie called the most-watched and the most-translated film in history (available in more than 2,100 languages) has been remastered in high-definition, given a new musical score, and titled The Jesus Film (formerly, just Jesus) for its release in disc and digital formats Tuesday. Taken from the biblical book of Luke, great attention was given to an accurate depiction of the story, and the movie is suitable for all ages.
Join sisters in prayer
Two sisterly discussions are coming the first week of April. On Tuesday from 8:45 to 10 a.m. Sister Mary Valerie Schneider, the liturgist at Swanton St. Richard Church, offers “Jesus' Prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane” as part of a breakfast series offered by the Sisters of Notre Dame at the Lial Renewal Center, 5908 Davis Rd., Whitehouse. Suggesed offering is $7. On April 5 Sister Shannon Schrein, a Sylvania Franciscan and dean of the graduate school at Lourdes University, speaks on “Women in the Bible: Steadfast Women of Grace” at the Regina Conference Center, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania, from 10 a.m. to noon. “Black Madonna” at Rosary Cathedral
An exact icon replica of the "Black Madonna" or Our Lady of Czestochowa--the original is in a monastery in Poland--has been taken to Catholic and Orthodox churches all over the world since summer 2012 for the Ocean to Ocean Campaign in Defense of Life. On Wednesday, it will be at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd., with veneration beginning at 3 p.m., a Rosary recital at 6:30, a Mass commemorating the ninth anniversary of Blessed John Paul II's death at 7, and a talk on the Black Madonna by the Rev. Peter West, vice president of Human Life International, after the service.
First TUSA conference
Toledoans United for Social Action holds its first annual conference at Monroe St. United Methodist Church, 3613 Monroe St, with a workshop Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. (freewill offering) and a prayer breakfast April 5 from 9 a.m. to noon ($10). The Rev. F. Douglas Powe, Jr., a professor at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., and author of New Wine, New Wineskins: How African American Congregations Can Reach New Generations, will speak and participate in a discussion on the topic of his book.
