Lutheran milestones

Will it take two Advents to equal Olivet? Maybe in terms of time, for Advent is 50 years old and Olivet is 100. Those Lutheran churches in Sylvania—Advent at 6735 Sylvania Ave. and Olivet at 5840 Monroe St.—celebrate their anniversaries over the next week.

Olivet will have a buffet dinner today at 6 p.m.; reservations have reached capacity. On Sunday at Olivet's 9 and 11 a.m. worship services, the Rev. Chris Boerger, secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, will preach, and Bishop Marcus Lohrmann, leader of the Northwestern Ohio Synod and a member of Olivet, will also take part. Olivet's congregation also recently called a new associate minister, the Rev. Nathan Tuff, who will take his place alongside lead pastor the Rev. Chrysanne Timm on June 1.

Advent's golden jubilee is May 3 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the church; the actual 50th anniversary was in February. A catered meal will be served, and former singers in the choir will provide music. Though RSVP time is past, church members who show up won't be turned away.

 

One night only

The Christian-oriented stage play Before I Let Go, written by RonSher T. Brooks, is performed today only at 7 p.m. at the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St., Maumee. The touring production tells the story of Dexter and Shereese, who are in conflict between attempting to live biblically and being outwardly successful but having their faith tested by addiction and depression. Cost is $25 at the door.

 

Choral cathedral

Archbold comes to Toledo Sunday when the Zion Mennonite Choir, a group of singers from several Christian churches in Archbold, sings at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd., at 3 p.m. On the program are Franz Schubert's Mass in G Major and well-known hymns and spirituals. Suggested donation is $5.

 

Calling for commitments

Toledoans United for Social Action will hold a Nehemiah Action, a public meeting about community problems in which citizens and groups ask local leaders for formal commitments to address the issues. Evidence on the problems is presented, solutions are offered, and public officials are asked to listen, respond, and act. The TUSA Nehemiah Action, named after a biblical figure who worked to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, takes place at Friendship Baptist Church, 5301 Nebraska Ave., Monday at 7 p.m., and focuses on domestic abuse and lead abatement.

People interested in becoming nurse ministers can enroll in a one-week foundations of faith community nursing education course, which offered by Faith Community Health Ministry Program of Northwest Ohio that runs daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. Starting prayer with breakfast

Thursday is both the National Day of Prayer and the National Day of Reason. The Northwest Ohio Prayer Breakfast will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a meal from 7 to 8:45 a.m. at the Premier Banquet Complex, 4480 Heatherdowns Blvd. The featured speaker is Krish Dhanam, author with former Microsoft president Rick Belluzzo of the recently published Hardheaded & Softhearted: Lessons from the Boardroom to the Break Room, is an executive coach trained by the motivational figure Zig Ziglar.
