Memory of others

Herbert Dettmer of Bowling Green published a book, Others: Christian and Patriotic Inspirational Verses, Poems, and Prayers, published two years ago, that is especially appropriate for Memorial Day. The book is dedicated to Army Staff Sgt. Herbert D. Fish, who was studying for the ministry when Pearl Harbor was attacked and who was killed in action on Okinawa in 1945 during World War II. Sgt. Fish's mother gave Mr. Dettmer, himself an Army veteran, a notebook of poems, prayers, and sketches that Sgt. Fish carried during his military service. Mr. Dettmer expanded on his namesake's collection for Others, adding material written by him and other family members. The 236-page book is available at tatepublishing.com and amazon.com, with prices ranging from $7.99 for an electronic edition to $14.99 in paperback.

Entrusting Diocese

The Rev. Charles Ritter, diocesan administrator for the Diocese of Toledo until a new Roman Catholic bishop is named, will celebrate a Mass at 5:30 p.m. today at the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation, 315 Clay St., Carey. The Mass will entrust the diocese to the care of Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary, held in celebration of the Sunday feast day of Our Lady of Consolation. Sunday Masses will take place at the shrine at 8 and 10 a.m., with a noon Mass celebrated by the Very Rev. David Ross, pastor of St. John and St. Rose parishes in Lima, in Italian and English. At 2:30 p.m., an outdoor Rosary procession and shrine devotions are scheduled, with prayers for healing.

Genesis and science

Answers in Genesis, the Christianity-defending organization behind the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Ky., comes to Genoa's Lemoyne Baptist Church, 25020 Bradner Rd., Sunday in the person of Bob Gillespie, who will speak at four different sessions for all ages on “Dinosaurs to Genesis and Science,” what the church is calling a creation conference. At 9:30 a.m., “Genesis and Science: Can Both Be True?” starts the day, then at 10:45 is “Genesis: Does It Really Matter?” At 5:30 p.m., Mr. Gillespie presents “Dinosaurs and the Bible,” and at 6:30 the talking will stop with “Creation Evangelism: Why Won't They Listen?”

Reunion Mass

Are you a Roman Catholic who had your first communion 50 years or more ago? If so, St. Joseph Parish, 104 W. Broadway St., Maumee, invites you to its annual Golden First Communion Reunion June 1 at 9 a.m., followed by a breakfast organized and served by the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus. The church has held this celebration for 84 years; this year, anyone whose first communion was in 1964 or earlier will be honored. It does not matter which parish a 50-year Mass attendee is a member of now, or took first communion at then. Ringing in the air

The Gardner Chime at Trinity Epsicopal Church, a set of 12 tuned bronze bells installed in 1942, will have its first recital since the chime's 2013 restoration on June 1 at 4:30 p.m. Kipp Cortez, a carillon instructor at the University of Michigan, will play, rain or shine. The recital is free.
