Armory Church for sale after mortgage foreclosed

The Armory Church is set for auction after falling more than $3 million behind on a mortgage, according to county records.

A judge foreclosed on the property in December and later set it for sale at a sheriff’s auction on Feb. 28.

The Armory Church, formerly known as St. James Holiness Church of God in Christ, is at 3319 Nebraska Ave. Founded in 1952, the church has been at this location since 1984, according to the church’s website. Its facility seats about 3,000.

Senior Pastor William James said the congregation would continue to meet for regular services through the end of the month. 

"We are working on some behind-the-scenes strategies to try to secure our church," he said. 

Court records indicate that Key Star Capital filed a complaint in June, 2017, contending the church was more than $3 million behind on mortgage payments. 

The property is appraised at $925,000, court records show.

The church also leases space to a private elementary school, SunBridge Schools, that operates its fourth, fifth and sixth grade classes out of the facility. Steve Mitchell, board chairman for SunBridge Schools, said he expects the charter school to continue operating there.

“I don’t anticipate it having any impact on school operations,” he said of the foreclosure and auction. “When this all flushes out, we’ll have a new landlord.”
