Giant Eagle expands $4 prescription program

11/3/2006

After offering customers free generic prescription cough and cold remedies last month, supermarket chain Giant Eagle Inc. said yesterday it is expanding

its program to make commonly prescribed dosages of 292 generic prescription medications available for only $4.

The switch closely mirrors what Wal-Mart Stores Inc. rolled out last month in Ohio

and Michigan and a dozen other states. The Giant Eagle program, which began last month with a few drugs in just Toledo and Columbus, will be expanded to its

stores statewide.

Customers with a valid prescription and a Giant Eagle loyalty card will be able to get

up to a 30-day supply of certain generic drugs for $4. The chain also will continue to give away 56 generic prescription antibiotics and other remedies for combat

colds and coughs.

Ohio and Michigan stores of Meijer Inc. also are offering some generic drugs for free to customers with valid prescriptions, and Target and Kmart pharmacies nationwide have related low-cost generic drug programs.
