Coffee chain to close 80 shops, at least 1 in Toledo

Beginning today, the new Caribou Coffee logo will appear on in-store items: cups, napkins, menu boards and signage.Throughout 2010 and into 2011, permanent in-store elements and exterior signage will be updated; in the summer of 2010, new coffee packaging designs will appear in coffeehouses and in retail locations nationwide. Caribou Coffee will close 80 underperforming stores and rebrand another 88 Caribou outlets to Peet’s Coffee & Tea, just five months after the company was purchased by a German firm for $340 million.

The company has two Caribou stores in the Toledo area. An employee at the 6975 W. Central Ave. location in Sylvania Township said that store would close. An employee at the Westfield Franklin Park location in Toledo would not comment on the future of that store.

A Cincinnati TV station reported that local Caribou employees were told Friday night that all Ohio Caribou stores would be closing.
