Waterville City Council has approved zoning changes that could allow a new drugstore to be built on the city’s west side.
After a hearing during which a neighboring property owner requested assurance that his home will be well buffered from the proposed Rite Aid pharmacy, council unanimously approved changing the zoning for two parcels on State Rt. 64 at Waterville-Monclova Road — a vacant lot and the current site of Life Pointe Church — to C-1 commercial. City officials said the church plans to sell its property and move.
Representatives of the project’s developer assured neighbor Doug Vaughn that his Eastridge Drive property will be shielded by an earthen mound with landscaping and that there will be no signs facing his house.
City administrator James Bagdonas said a planning and zoning commission meeting about the Rite Aid proposal is scheduled for June 5 at 7 p.m.
The vacant lot on the corner had been zoned for agricultural use while the church site had been zoned C-2 downtown commercial.
