Paul Mitchell chooses Sylvania for its 4th school in Ohio

A beauty school for Paul Mitchell Systems has chosen the City of Sylvania as the location for its fourth such school in Ohio.

Lisa Tilton, director for Paul Mitchell School of Toledo, said the company chose Sylvania because it liked the busy rhythm of Monroe Street and the community. Company officials looked at properties in the Toledo area, including buildings along Airport Highway, for more than two years.

The 13,000 square-foot vacant space at 5555 S. Monroe St. is undergoing a renovation before the cosmetology school opens Sept. 1, with the first class beginning Sept. 3, Mrs. Tilton said.

The building was vacant for about six years. The facility will serve the greater Toledo area, including Maumee, Perrrysburg, said the school’s admissions leader Ashlee Harris.

Toledo has a high percentage of usage of Paul Mitchell products, Ms. Harris said.

Although the school will be instructing applicants in an array of beauty services -- from styling hair, colors, manicures, weaves, deep conditioning treatments, updos and more -- it will have a salon open to the public.

As part of their training, the students will perform the salon services under the supervision of licensed Paul Mitchell instructors after they complete six weeks of schooling, Mrs. Tilton said. The services will be offered at discounted prices, she said.

Enrollment won’t begin until the school is approved by the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology, scheduled to be considered Aug. 28.

The school will have 30 staff members, with classes having about 15 students like its school in Cincinnati, Mrs. Tilton said.

There are 117 Paul Mitchell Schools across the nation. Besides Cincinnati, its others are in Twinsburg, a suburb of Cleveland, and Columbus.

Mrs. Tilton said company officials will introduce themselves at the 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19 City Council meeting.

Jean Paul DeJoria, who founded Paul Mitchell in 1980 with Paul Mitchell, is expected to be at a grand opening of the school on Nov. 4, Mrs. Tilton said.

The company plans on giving back to the community, as it does in other locations, Mrs. Tilton said.. Last year the Cincinnati school raised $62,000 for local charities.
