The new Kroger store on Reynolds Road in Maumee that opens on Friday will replace a store on Glendale Avenue in South Toledo.

The Kroger Co.’s new store at 1435 Reynolds Rd. at Dussel Drive, the site of a former car dealership, will open for business at 8 a.m. Friday after nearly 11 months of construction.

Friday’s first day of business will also serve as the store’s grand opening.

The 90,921-square-foot store is the first Kroger within the boundaries of Maumee and is part of a $20 million investment the Cincinnati supermarket chain is making to build stores or refurbish its stores in the Toledo area.

Kroger recently expanded its Lambertville store to be a Kroger Marketplace store, and it plans to build another Marketplace store on Airport Highway at Holloway Road. It also recently upgraded its store on Monroe Street near Secor Road.

The new Maumee store is expected to replace a Kroger store on Glendale Avenue near Reynolds Road. The closing of the Glendale store, which will shut down permanently at 9 p.m. Thursday, will coincide with the opening of the Maumee store.

Glendale store employees were given the opportunity to transfer to the Maumee store or other Kroger locations in the Toledo area.

Kroger’s Columbus division president, Bruce Macaulay, said in a statement that the Maumee store was designed “to meet the needs of today’s shopper, with convenience, quality products, and energy efficiency in mind.”

The new store will include a Starbucks coffee shop, an extensive produce department, a hot food service bistro, a sushi bar, a wine tasting bar, a cheese and olive shop, a drive-through pharmacy, and a fuel center. The store was designed to earn an Energy Star certification with LED track lighting, skylights, and a heat reclamation system.

For the store’s grand opening, Kroger plans to give away prizes starting at 8 a.m., offer commemorative cake pops at 11 a.m., and hold family entertainment from 4 to 6 p.m. The store also plans to host a children’s Halloween event on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m.
