  • What could be eliciting the attention of these binocular-assisted folks? Birds. Metroparks naturalist Kelly Mikewski, right, leads a group of adults and children, including Cooper Hite, 5, left, and Kiayanna Crosby, 7, both of Toledo, at Mallard Lake in Oak Openings Preserve's Buehner Center Porch as part of festivities marking Migratory Bird Day.

Naturalist Milewski kneels and points out some birds to the assembled flock of avian-watchers.

The outing focused on more than birds. Heidi Przeslawski, 5, grimaces at the garlic mustand plant shown to her by her mother, Michelle, with sister, Meghan, 7, left; they are from Toledo.

Although he's only 2, Lucas Przeslawski, Ms. Przeslawski's son, gets his hands on a pair of binoculars, the better to see what everybody else is watching in the great outdoors.

David Price, 9, and his father, Michael, of Waterville, follow the flight of a cardinal amid the woods.
