The Perrysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, in conjunction with The American Farmland Trust, will distribute free tote bags at the Perrysburg Farmers' Market today and next Thursday.

The "No Farms, No Food" tote bags will be handed out to customers at the market to promote farmland protection and the importance of conservation in maintaining a local base for food production.

The Perrysburg tote-bag distribution is the first give-away of its type. There are plans to repeat the event in other locations.

The farmland trust is the leading national organization working with communities and individuals to protect the best farmland, plan for the future of agriculture, and keep the environment healthy.

The "No Farms, No Food" event is part of a larger campaign dedicated to supporting and enhancing local food economies.

According to the AFT, buying at farmers' markets keeps money in the local community and helps farms remain economically viable.

In its 10th year of operation, the Perrysburg Farmers' Market is held on Thursdays from 3 to 8 p.m. on Louisiana Avenue at Front Street in downtown Perrysburg.

The market season runs from mid-May through mid-October. More than 30 vendors offer a variety of locally-produced items including peaches, sweet corn, raspberries, melons, apples, salad greens, eggs, honey, cut flowers, perennials, baked goods, and prepared foods, in addition to locally handcrafted items.
