Monclova, Springfield township fire departments to seek levy renewals

The fire departments in Monclova and Springfield townships are going to the voters in November with requests for the renewal of levies expiring at the end of the year.

Both five-year levies are for operations.

Monclova will be requesting 1.5 mills, according to Fire Chief Kevin Bernhard.

He said that the levy was adopted in 1985 and accounts for virtually all of the department's budget.

Sharon Bucher, the township's fiscal officer, said it generates $589,000 annually.

Springfield will be asking for 1.3 mills, Fire Chief Barry Cousino said.

The millage produces $760,505 per year and accounts for about 25 percent of the department's budget, Chief Cousino said.

The Springfield millage was initially adopted in 1972.

Since then it has been renewed five times and was replaced in 2003, the chief said.

A mill equals $1 per $1,000 of a property's assessed value.
