Toledo area residents and high school students are invited to learn about healthy living during a Care Fair for Health 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday on the campus of Owens Community College on Oregon Road.

The annual health event will be at the college's Student Health and Activities Center. Admittance to the Care Fair, presented by the college's School of Health Sciences and the School of Nursing, is free.

More than 60 displays will outline an array of topics, including CPR, cancer information and care, organ and tissue donation, nutrition and culinary arts, diabetes information, mental health, substance abuse, heart health and prevention, HIV awareness, sports care, and stress management. Free screenings and tests, including blood pressure and blood sugar screenings, will be offered, and Owens faculty and students will perform free bone density tests and scans.

ProMedica Health System will provide flu shots and blood sugar screenings. The flu shots are $25; receipts will be provided as documentation for insurance reimbursement.

Organizations set to participate include the American Red Cross, Mobile Meals of Toledo, St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, the University of Toledo Medical Center, Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Dental Center of Northwest Ohio, Meijer Pharmacy, and the Sight Center of Northwest Ohio.

Owens' representatives will talk about Heimlich and CPR maneuvers.

Information will be provided by Owens to attendees interested in pursuing a college education, such as through the School of Health Sciences and the School of Nursing. Graduates have gone on to become dental hygienists, dietetic technicians, chefs, hotel and restaurant managers, occupational therapy assistants, nurses, health information technicians, and radiographers and ultrasound technologists.

Local high schools attending the event will include Four County Career Center, Onsted High School, Penta Career Center, Port Clinton High School, Sentinel Career Center, Scott High School, Vanguard Career Center, Whitmer High School and Woodward High School.

Also during the fair, the Student Nurses Association will be holding a bake sale.
