Maumee gets nearly $60,000 for River Road storm sewer
4/13/2011A nearly $60,000 grant has been awarded by the Ohio Public Works Commission to the city of Maumee for emergency funding for the Key Street and River Road storm sewer collapse that closed the intersection for more than a month.
The $59,639 grant represents 60 percent of the project's total estimated cost of $99,399.
Workers from Anderzack-Pitzen Construction of Metamora in Fulton County repaired the 33-foot-deep sinkhole that caused the closing of River Road at Key Street in Maumee. City council recently authorized spending up to $100,000 for the project.
The city announced Thursday that the work was finished and the road has reopened.
The roadway was closed in early March after Joseph Camp, acting service director, was notified of the sinkhole, and after investigating, it was discovered that a sizable void had developed beneath the ground surface in the area of the storm sewer.
Because of the size, depth, and nature of the sinkhole, River Road was closed to through traffic at Key Street.
Emergency repairs were made to the storm sewer manhole, sidewalk, curb, and street as a result of a below-pavement washout caused by a broken sewer manhole.
In other action last week, council approved a contract with Entertainment Supply & Technology LLC of Lutz, Fla., in the amount of $153,768 for the digital cinema projection and 3D systems to be installed at the Maumee Indoor Theater.
The contract agreement means the Maumee Indoor Theater could be up and running with digital and 3-D projection in 30 days, Jim Walter, president of Great Eastern Theatres, told council during its committee-of-the-whole meeting just ahead of the regular council session.
Movie prints, or film, are becoming difficult to obtain and could be obsolete in the coming years, officials have said.
As proposed last year when the capital improvements were outlined by Mr. Walter, when upgrades are made prices would be raised 50 cents per ticket for digital movies with a $2 premium for 3-D.
Prices would range from $4 per non-3-D movie ($2 on Wild Wednesdays), up to $6 for 3-D movie ($4 on Wild Wednesdays).
Adult admission for digital movies at some theaters costs $10 and for 3-D, the admission can be upwards of $13, depending on the premium.
In December council approved a three-year renewal of the Maumee Indoor Theater management agreement with Great Eastern Theatres.
Under the agreement, Great Eastern Theatres provides a management team and employees to operate the Maumee Indoor Theater; acts as the agent for movies, live entertainment, community receptions, and all other events; provides professional marketing services; provides record-keeping services; maintains income and expense reports, and represents the theater by maintaining its public persona at all times.
