Plan is unveiled to save orchestra in Columbus

COLUMBUS - The Columbus Symphony says it must make dramatic cuts to save the financially troubled orchestra.

The restructuring plan, proposed Thursday, would cut the number of full-time musicians from 53 to 31 and eliminate some concerts from the 2008-2009 season.

Robert Trafford, chairman of the symphony board, says the orchestra forecasts a $1.5 million deficit this year, down from a record $2.2 million last season.

Mr. Trafford cites declining concert revenue and support from donors as well as rising musician costs.

Jim Akins, chairman of the musicians' committee, says the players feel betrayed by the proposal. He says musicians worry that the cuts could mean the orchestra's end.
