Grand Hotel gets green accolade
5/4/2009MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. - Mackinac Island's famed Grand Hotel is now officially a green hotel too.
State officials have named the 122-year-old, 385-room hotel a green lodging, recognizing its efforts to save energy and recycle. It opened Friday for the season.
Andrew McGreevy, head of heating and cooling for the hotel, designed a system to cool 170 waterfront rooms with water heat exchangers.
The Detroit Free Press said the hotel also composts its own yard waste.
The island in the straits connecting lakes Huron and Michigan has a history of environmentalism, with its curb on motorized vehicles.
