COLUMBUS - Ohio's top elections official has turned away 3,000 petition signatures from people asking to put the issue of slots at racetracks on the ballot.

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner yesterday rebuffed LetOhioVote.Org's attempt to begin the referendum process for the lottery-run slots.

Spokesman Jeff Ortega says the state budget containing the slots policy explicitly states that the policy is not subject to referendum on the ballot.

LetOhioVote.Org has asked the Ohio Supreme Court to find that the group should be allowed to place the question on the ballot.

Spokesman Carlo LoParo says Ms. Brunner doesn't have authority to decide whether the group's claim is valid and should simply validate the ballot language.
