Bing leads field in primary

DETROIT - Incumbent Dave Bing swept past five challengers in Tuesday's primary race and will move on to the Nov. 3 general election and what he expects to be a four-year term as Detroit mayor.

The professional basketball Hall-of-Famer and former businessman had more than 74.3 percent of the vote in the nonpartisan primary. The top two finishers move on to the general election.

With all 629 precincts reporting, only 980 votes separated second and third place. Accountant Tom Barrow had 11.1 percent, or 10,302 votes. Business consultant Jerroll Sanders had 10.1 percent, or 9,322 votes.

Ms. Sanders said her team may ask that the votes be recounted.

The three other candidates each had less than 3 percent.
