Cuts could mean delays at Detroit Metro Airport

ROMULUS, Mich. — Officials say passengers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport will face flight delays and longer waits for onsite shuttles as a result of $8.9 million in proposed budget cuts.

The Wayne County Airport Authority has proposed cutting its budget to $264.5 million for the 2010 fiscal year, beginning Oct. 1.

Thomas Naughton, chief financial officer for the authority, told the organization's board Tuesday that travelers will face more “weather-related runway closures.” He said shuttle drivers and workers who keep the runways clear during winter storms will be among at least 109 full-time positions that will be eliminated in the next year.

The Detroit News says the board is expected to approve the budget Sept. 29.
