MILAN, Mich. - Firefighters battled an intense blaze for more than two hours yesterday but were unable to save a delicatessen, authorities said.

Cone Deli and Catering, 20130 Cone Rd., in Milan Township, was a total loss, Milan Area Fire Chief Bob Stevens said.

Firefighters responding to the alarm just after 2:30 p.m. found the structure 70 percent involved with heavy smoke and flames, Chief Stevens said. The fire was extinguished at about 4:50 p.m.

Seven area departments provided mutual aid, mostly with tanker assistance, as there were no hydrants near the scene of the blaze, the chief explained.

A residential unit attached to the deli received damage but is salvageable.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined, and no dollar loss was available.
