Michigan again weighs texting while driving ban
10/22/2009LANSING, Mich. — Michigan is among a growing number of states considering a crackdown on motorists who text message while driving.
A state House committee on Thursday approved a bill that would ban the practice except to report accidents, crimes or emergencies.
The legislation would make texting a secondary offense, meaning police would need some other reason to first pull over motorists. In most cases the fine would be about $100.
Similar legislation passed the Michigan House late last year but died without action in the Senate.
Sponsors say the legislation would not affect the use of GPS navigation devices.
AAA says 18 states have laws prohibiting all drivers from texting. Ten others have laws affecting teens.
