CLEVELAND — Higher tolls imposed last year on the Ohio Turnpike have an added pinch for motorists with rooftop luggage carriers or bike racks: they have been kicked into a higher toll classification.

Turnpike director George Distel says the turnpike has gotten complaints and is trying to remedy the situation.

The change means a motorist traveling the length of the 241-mile toll road with a rooftop bike rack would pay $25, not the $15 standard car rate.

The 7-foot, 6-inch height designation was added when higher tolls went into effect Oct. 1.

Distel says collectors have been given flexibility to override the higher rate, which is meant to reflect the extra weight of a tall vehicle.
