White House holds security meeting with Columbus mayor; online terrorist recruitment of residents a concern
5/19/2010COLUMBUS, Ohio — The mayor of Ohio's biggest city met with White House officials to discuss the threat of domestic radicalization and ways the government can help cities address this threat.
Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman's meeting Tuesday in Washington came as investigations continue around the country into alleged terrorist plots hatched at home.
Coleman spokesman Dan Williamson says the mayor discussed a city initiative that gives immigrants access to city services and programs.
Possible online recruiting by overseas Somali terrorists is a concern in Columbus because of its large Somali population.
There's no evidence anyone in Columbus has returned to Somalia to join terrorist groups, but the travels of as many as 20 young Somali men from Minneapolis have been investigated.
