First giraffe in 25 years born at Cincinnati Zoo

4/3/2011CINCINNATI — Officials say a giraffe has been born at the Cincinnati Zoo for the first time in more than 25 years.
A 4-year-old giraffe named Tessa gave birth Saturday, and the calf was trying to stand less than half an hour after the delivery. The sex of the calf wasn’t immediately known.
The zoo says Tessa and the newborn will stay inside through Monday. Visitors eventually will have a chance to help name the park’s newest addition.
The calf’s parents both arrived at the zoo in 2008 as a giraffe exhibit opened. The father, known as Kimba, came from a zoo in Rhode Island. Tessa came from the Houston Zoo.
Until the calf makes its public debut, the zoo plans to offer updates through its website and social networking pages.
