CINCINNATI — The condition of a 17-year-old high school student has improved, more than two weeks after he was hospitalized with a gunshot wound self-inflicted in a Cincinnati area classroom.

A University of Cincinnati Medical Center spokeswoman says his condition has been upgraded from critical to serious. She said today that medical privacy rules prevent her from releasing any details.

Police say the youth used a .45-caliber handgun to shoot himself in the head April 29 at La Salle High School, an all-male Catholic school just west of Cincinnati. Police who rushed to the scene have said there were no indications that any other students or staff were threatened.
