DETROIT  — Eight chickens and five goats were found dead at an urban farm operated by students at a Detroit alternative high school.

WXYZ-TV and the Detroit Free Press report today that the animals were killed at the Catherine Ferguson Academy for pregnant and parenting teenagers.

Michigan Humane Society investigator Mark Ramos tells the Free Press that a cat also was killed, while another cat and a chicken were injured.

School principal Asenath Andrews says some of the animals were bludgeoned while others had their necks cut.

Andrews says the animals “were fine” at the end of the school day Thursday and that it looked as if “some crazy person had gone crazy on the animals.”

Produce from the farm is sold by students at area farmer’s markets.
