The Ohio Lake Erie Commission recently awarded several grants to local organizations through its protection fund, which was created to finance projects and research to protect Lake Erie. Thanks to Ohioans who have purchased a Lake Erie license plate, the fund awarded grants in the amount of $14,785 to Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, $11,835 to The University of Toledo, and $15,000 to the Crawford Soil & Water Conservation District.

Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center plans to use the funds for a green space in an urban Toledo neighborhood. The project includes the use of six vacant parcels to establish gardens near a site in which housing may be built. The University of Toledo plans to use the grant to study the effects of river restoration in the Ottawa River.

The Crawford Soil & Water Conservation District plans to work to reduce storm-water runoff in Bucyrus. The project will focus on promoting water quality, and it will help install about 20 rain gardens in the city.
