COLUMBUS  — A teenager has been killed after his car broke down on the side of a Columbus highway and was hit by a pickup truck that ran off the road.

Columbus police say they are still trying to determine why the driver of the truck ran off Interstate 275 north late Monday and hit a Cadillac that 18-year-old Brandon Smith had pulled off onto the shoulder after it broke down.

Smith had exited the car when the Dodge Ram pickup, driven by 25-year-old Walter Dixon, struck the Cadillac. Police said Smith was dead at the scene.

Police said alcohol was not a factor. No charges have been filed.
