2 Detroit firefighters hurt as blazes hit city

Annual Halloween week anti-arson campaign continues

DETROIT — Officials say two Detroit firefighters were hurt as a series of blazes hit the city amid its annual Halloween season anti-arson campaign.

The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press report the firefighters suffered minor injuries. One received a neck injury when a tree branch fell, and the other suffered burns.

Detroit fire Senior Chief Larry Gassel says “the city was pretty busy” Wednesday night and early today.

Detroit residents and others have been on patrol this week as part of an annual anti-arson campaign for the pre-Halloween period that once saw an upsurge of fires. The city says fire totals won’t be released until after the Angels’ Night period, which runs through today.

The patrols are focused particularly on protecting vacant structures from arsonists. Flint has a similar program.
