MANSFIELD, Ohio — A police dispatcher says firefighters have responded to a report of smoke and flames at an animal shelter in north-central Ohio.

Dispatcher Mark Huckleberry says the fire is under control at the shelter in Mansfield, but it’s not yet clear if there are any injuries to the animals. He says a “significant” number of animals were housed at the Stop The Overpopulation of Pets shelter but did not have an exact number.

Huckleberry says a shelter employee called authorities just before 6:30 p.m. Friday to report the fire in the basement. Firefighters remain on the scene.
