Columbus police probe underground explosions

COLUMBUS  — Power has been restored in two areas of Ohio’s capital where a pair of explosions blew off manhole covers, set off fire alarms and flooded emergency responders with calls.

Authorities in Columbus today were trying to determine the source of the explosions, which were apparently underground.

Officials said the explosions appeared to be related to problems with equipment belonging to a power company. Police say no foul play is suspected.

Police say the first blast was reported around 1:30 a.m., and the second occurred about an hour later. No injuries were reported.

Police cordoned off streets, and an electric company cut power to several surrounding buildings and government offices, delaying work for some downtown employees. Some traffic lights were knocked out. Smoke was seen coming from one of the manholes.
