COLUMBUS — The Ohio Supreme Court says the number of new mortgage foreclosures in the state was down in 2013 for the fourth consecutive year.

The court says the 53,163 new foreclosure filings in common pleas courts last year were about 17,000 fewer than the previous year, a 25 percent drop.

The court began tracking foreclosures in 1990, and the number rose for 14 consecutive years through 2009, which saw a high of more than 89,000.

The 2013 figures represent a 40-percent drop from 2009.

The court reported that only four Ohio counties reported an increase in foreclosures from last year.

Cuyahoga County, home to Cleveland, again led the state with 8,829 filings, although that figure is also down.
