OSHA fines 3 businesses for safety violations
Infractions levied more than $57,000 in fines
5/22/2014Three northwest Ohio businesses are facing fines from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
Swanton Welding & Machining Co. Inc., was fined $24,300 by OSHA for safety violations at its facility on Broadway Street in Swanton.
The company was charged with what the bureau called five “serious” violations based on inspections between December, 2013, and April, 2014.
The violations include inadequate safety guards on equipment, lack of an energy control procedure to prevent injuries while performing maintenance on equipment and failing to ensure that employees wear appropriate eye protection.
American Trim LLC of Lima was fined $17,100 for three serious violations.
OSHA said the company did not have adequate shut-off measures for machinery that was being cleaned or repaired.
Also, Hank’s Plumbing & Heating Co. of Toledo was fined $16,170 for three serious violations.
The company was cited for allowing employees to ride in the bucket of a hydraulic excavator, for not providing an adequate method for employees to exit a trench excavation and for improperly using a protective shield during excavation.
The companies have 15 days from receipt of the citations to comply, request an informal conference or contest the findings.
